‘I’m not going to revise for them.’
‘They don’t count towards anything.’
‘I’ll work harder for the real thing.’
Sound familiar?
Well, if this is your attitude towards mock exams, you might want to read on.
Let’s face it, there aren’t many people in this world who enjoy exams. The pressure, writer’s block, waiting for results, the never-ending questions from teachers and parents. It’s a daunting and stressful time.
Mock exams are imminent for most GCSE students in the UK right now. If approached correctly, they can teach you a lot about exam technique, revision skills and how to manage your time effectively.
Here are a few tips to get you through your mock exams:
1. Take them seriously. The more work you do now, the less pressure there will be on you in the summer.
2. Check with your teacher which papers you will be sitting and draw up a revision plan to cover all topics.
3. Make sure you have researched past papers, so you are aware of how the questions are structured.
4. Re-read the literature texts. Use ‘Audible’ for drama texts but follow the text as you listen. This will allow you to gain a sense of the actual drama/characters.
5. Stay calm and remember it’s ok to make mistakes. This is how we learn.
6. Pay close attention to feedback from your teacher once the exams are over.
7. Do not become obsessed with the mark/ grade, the most important thing you need to know is what skills you need to work on, to improve your grade.
8. Experiment with different revision techniques to find out what works best for you. It’s a personal thing!
