Exam anxiety

Exam nerves are normal…

Everyone feels them, even if they don’t admit it.

Many students feel that nerves can prevent them from doing well in their exams. As we enter exam season, think carefully about your routines and how you prepare yourself physically and mentally for an exam. The night before the exam is particularly important.

Last-minute panic!

Don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself the evening before an exam, if you want to study, read over some exemplar answers, or listen to the audiobook of your literature text. Cramming the night before will only panic you and make you tired.

Look after yourself

You may sometimes have two exams per day during the summer exam season. You will need to factor in enough sleep and good food to replenish and refresh for the next day. Get some fresh air, go for a walk, or do your favourite exercise to help you relax and sleep better.

Timing is key

When you are in the exam, don’t be concerned about others around you; if others are already writing and you are still reading the question or planning, that’s ok. Go at your own pace whilst keeping an eye on the time. Make a judgement as to when it is time to move on to the next question. Always aim to spend five minutes checking through your work at the end of the exam.

Don’t dwell on it!

After the exam, do not try to ‘dissect’ the exam by asking friends what they have written. It is normal to want to offload your worries, but you will only make yourself more anxious by comparing yourself to others. Distract yourself with your favourite music, food or tv programme-whatever makes you happy.

Remember, you have worked hard for two years, now this is your time to shine!

Good luck!
